Navigating the social world can be difficult for many people and especially challenging for adults with social cognitive issues. Understanding what people expect in social situations and being able to respond in the manner that is socially expected can feel like traveling in a foreign country without a guide book. The work world is also full of hidden social expectations . It is not enough to simply go to work and do a good job. Knowing how to have a conversation with your boss and or co workers , what to say when your boss shows you a picture of their "big catch" from their fishing trip, or a picture of their new grandchild can make a big difference in a persons ability to get ahead at work or sometimes simply stay employed. Outside of work, making friends,or figuring out how to relate to someone you are romantically interested in can be fraught with the equivalent of social landmines for the person who doesn't understand the world of social interactions. The good news is that social thinking can help! With social thinking skills you can learn how to figure out social expectations at work, how to initiate and sustain conversation, what to say in those awkward situations and develop truly meaningful social relationships. |
